Sir: Looking after senior citizens is the moral duty of every Pakistani. The number of senior citizens is more than 10 million in Pakistan. In the west, old people’s homes have been created to take care of them. This trend is being followed in Pakistan as well, but unfortunately old people’s homes have become lonely places for old people. It is so because our surrounding and pattern of upbringing is not yet ready to accommodate such cultural shifts. The Punjab Youth Festival (PYF) has provided participation opportunities to people from all walks of life. Special events for prisoners have been arranged. Similarly special arrangements were made to allow senior citizens to take part in sports. The organizers of PYF had arranged a few competitions at an old people’s home located in Township, Lahore. The senior citizens participated in the contests with zeal and appreciated the effort made by the Punjab government. Some elderly people’s eyes were filled with tears of happiness. Organizing events for senior citizens demonstrates the respect we hold for them. Participation in such activities helps senior citizens enjoy a purposeful life. Let’s encourage this great step.
