Sir: “Climate change is a profoundly religious, spiritual, ethical, and moral issue for us, the Muslims.” These thought provoking words from one of my most caring and thoughtful teachers echo in my mind regularly. Regrettably, in Pakistan today, from Karachi to Kashmir, nothing practical is being done for natural and social ecology or for the protection of the environment and human life. Indeed, climate change is about our responsibility as spiritual deputies to care for each other and the future by caring for all of this wondrous creation. In this dismal scenario, we need to recover, revive and restore our original spiritual values, by which I mean the values of the Indus Valley Civilisation, coupled with religious values that respect creation. It is our prime duty, in particular, that of our fickle rulers, wasteful bureaucrats and visionless technocrats, to examine the ethics for responsibly using natural resources in the country.
