Intelligentsia condemns attacks on Hindu temples

ISLAMABAD: Writers, poets, rights activists and intellectuals gathered at the Shah Abdul Lateef Bhittai Community Centre to condemn the recent attacks on the Hindu temples in different parts of Sindh. A resolution was passed to condemn the attack on a Hindu temple in Larkana, the attack on HanuMan temple in Hyderabad and the attack on Barbitham temple in Tharparkar.“Sindh is the land of Sufis who have preached tolerance, interfaith harmony and love for humanity for centuries. Such attacks are deemed as attacks on the Sindh’s historic identity which was earned through the struggle of the Sufis and the progressive people of Sindh,” said the resolution. The resolution demanded the protection of all minority communities and their historic sites of worship.Speaking on the occasion, rights activist Naseer Memon regretted the inaction of the authorities during the early hours of attack on a temple in Larkana. “There are conspiracies to malign the tolerant culture of Sindh by forces of fanaticism but people of Sindh are against such attacks and there is indigenous resistance against such incidents,” he said. Memon added that the local communities and religious leaders stood by the Hindu community in Larkana during recent incidents.Another rights activist, Zubaida Birwani said that the people of Sindh have always rejected extremism and violent means of achieving goals. “Local communities in Sindh are well integrated with each other regardless of their religious identity, and we demand from the authorities concerned to take immediate actions to protect minority rights and ensure the safety of their lives, property and places of worship,” she said.The resolution passed by the SGA members also condemned the attack on journalist Raza Rumi. It demanded that the culprits be arrested immediately and brought to justice.
