WPC condemns murder of woman outside LHC

ISLAMABAD: The Women’s Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) has strongly condemned and expressed deep grief over the murder of a pregnant woman outside the Lahore High Court (LHC). Farzana Parveen, the victim, was stoned to death in the name of honour by her family on Tuesday for marrying the man she loved. Nearly 20 members of her family, including her father and brothers, attacked her with batons and bricks in broad daylight in front of dozens of onlookers in the LHC, and unfortunately nobody from among the police or general public came to her rescue. Every year, as many as 1,000 women fall prey to honour killing. The WPC expressed serious concern over the increasing instance of violence against women which is mainly because of no convictions in such cases. The culprits are often either acquitted or pardoned by the family of the deceased. The horrible development of cases of violence against women is indicative of poor implementation of existing laws. In order to alleviate and control the increasing number of assaults against women, it is pertinent to ensure the implementation of laws across the country. Members of the WPC urged the Punjab chief minister to take swift notice of the incident, and ascertain that the culprits are sent behind the bars and convicted.
