ISLAMABAD: Marghzar Zoo, once a frequently visited point in the capital, is fast losing its charm and attraction for people due to less number of animals and species. At present, the zoo is without big cats like lions, tigers, and leopards, besides brown bear, as there are only 17 types of mammals and 50 species. Many people daily visit the zoo but their response is somewhat unsatisfactory since there are a limited number of animals. The visitors have called for bringing more and attractive species in order to attract people for a visit to the zoo. “Further induction of animals should immediately be focused, as animals are the main attraction of the zoo,” a student, Ayesha Sadiq pointed out. She said the lion could not be brought even after the death of earlier animal some ten years ago. There are also reports of more animals dying in recent years. Some more animals including elephant, monkey and crocodile have also died, she highlighted.Replying to a question, Marghazar Zoo Director Administration Abdur Raheed informed that a budget of 100 million has been requested for development and up-gradation of the zoo.The director said after release of funds, a hospital would be established for treatment of animals and birds at the zoo. He said under an expansion plan, more animals, especially lions will be brought into the zoo as early as possible, while other big cats will be made available after construction of more cages.Regarding vaccination of animals, he said the vaccination is carried out timely. A few months back, all the animals were vaccinated against a disease called FMD, he maintained. There is no proper nutritionist and some expert workers have to take care of the diet of animals, birds and other species, he lamented. To a question, he said all the animals and species are local, only elephants were gifted by Sri Lankan government. According to an official of Capital Development Authority, the new space for elephant was built at a cost of Rs 2.5 million.
