Women demand subsidy on food, household items

ISLAMABAD: Women from different walks of life have demanded subsidies on household items, especially on food stuff in the upcoming budget.Food is the basic necessity of life and the price hike has reduced the purchasing power of the public Sumbal Hussain, an architect, said that people are expecting separate package for the holy month of Ramazan. She said that women are directly affected by the budget and there should be an increase in the education and health budget. She added that the employment opportunities be increased for the women from all walks of life.Sara Afzal, a student said, “We are pinning hopes on the government that it would announce special facilities to the widows and the affected women in the budget.” A large number of women are contributing a major share in the agriculture sector and there should be a focus on the betterment of women workers in this sector.Huma Nasir, a working woman said, “The working women are facing the issues of shortage of hostels and transport.” She urged the government to keep in focus the issue of working women in finalising proposals for the budget.The government in the budget of the year 2013-14 had announced a new micro-finance scheme for the entrepreneurs, allocating Rs 5 billion to launch a scheme of Qarze-Hassana (loans without mark-up) for which 50 percent of the beneficiaries were women. While on the other hand, Rs 70 billion was allocated for the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) to empower women.
