Christmas preparations in full swing in twin cities

ISLAMABAD/RAWALPINDI: With just two days left in the grand festival of Christmas, members of the Christian community in the twin cities are giving final touches to their preparations for celebrating the event in a befitting manner.
With each passing day until the Christmas Eve, people prepare for the festivity with more enthusiasm. People are giving final touches to their programmes and parties to celebrate the day with their loved ones. From official gatherings to cake cutting ceremonies in small communities, the joyous occasion fills the atmosphere with the colours of Christmas that mainly include Christmas trees, Santa Clauses, carols and gifts.
Girls and boys studying in various educational institutions run by the churches are rehearsing for tableau and carols to add charm to the Christmas functions. Many youngsters were seen composing songs to be sung at functions in connection with Christmas.
“This day has great significance for us. We usually decorate our homes and start the day with prayers in the Church for the welfare of the whole humanity and progress of the country,” said Samuel Gill, a government official. “We visit our relatives and exchange gifts, cakes and greeting cards with them on the occasion,” he said.
As the Christian community is busy in decorating trees and exchanging gifts, shopkeepers have also established special stalls of Christmas cards and other related items in front of their shops to attract a maximum number of customers.
A large number of people, including youngsters, could be seen visiting the Sunday bazaars and markets of the twin cities to shop for themselves and their loved ones, while youths were more interested in buying Christmas cards and gifts.
Asad Amjad, a shopkeeper, said, “Christmas is a big occasion which brings an opportunity to earn a handsome amount through selling decorative ornaments for Christmas trees, teddy bears, chocolates, greeting cards, and other gifts.”
He said beautiful Christmas trees were the centre of attraction for most of the customers coming to his shop.
According to a survey, sweet sellers make special Christmas cakes with greeting texts and decorative toppers that people gift each other to show their love and care.
The main ritual of Christmas celebrations is the decoration of Christmas trees.
The tree is usually adorned with different ornaments, including baubles, small bells painted in gold or silver, stars of different shapes and sizes, pinecones, apples, candies, tinsel and balloons.
Christmas is an annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ celebrated on December 25 as a religious and cultural holiday by billions of people around the world.
A holiday in many countries around the world, the day is also celebrated by an increasing number of non-Christians and is an integral part of the holiday season.
In Pakistan, including the federal capital, Muslims also express solidarity with Christians on the occasion.
Meanwhile, the Islamabad police have also made special security arrangements for Christmas, as officials will be deployed in front of all major churches of the city.
