Islamabad IGP sacked for 'refusing' crackdown

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Thursday removed Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) Aftab Cheema from his position, a development that echoed in the capital and created in a stir in the twin marches tucked in at the Constitution Avenue. The Interior Ministry later confirmed that Cheema has been removed and DIG Khalid Khattak was given the charge of acting IGP. Some news channels claimed that Cheema was removed after his refusal to launch a crackdown on the PTI and PAT protesters, but the government quarters said the interior minister was not satisfied with the performance of the IG.
