MPs panic as PAT workers besiege parliament

ISLAMABAD: Panic struck the parliamentarians and employees of the Parliament House on Wednesday after the Pakistan Awami Tehreek’s (PAT) workers laid siege to its building in the Red Zone.On directives of PAT Chief Tahirul Qadri, his workers besieged the parliament building by assembling before the gates of the building as well as the Cabinet Block’s building gate that was made as an alternate arrangement to access the Parliament House. As the national assembly went into session and the lawmakers started debating on the political situation, stirred up PTI and PAT protests, the PAT workers encircled the gates of the Parliament House, raising slogans against the government and the parliamentarians. As the session was quickly adjourned compared to its tradition, the parliamentarians got stuck in the building. Apart from the parliamentarians, the employees of both the national assembly and the senate were also taken aback on the news of siege of the Parliament House. As soon as the session of the national assembly was over, the parliamentarians appeared in a hurry to go out after knowing that Qadri had asked his followers not to let anyone leave the building. After arrival at gate number one, where the parliamentarians park their vehicles, they were astonished to see the gates blocked to go outside of the Parliament House. The administration, however, immediately made the arrangements to let the parliamentarians and the employees leave through the President House. The gates of the President House that are usually closed were opened for the members of the Parliament House, employees, and for the media personnel.Apparently, worried by the siege of the building, everyone rushed to go out that caused a chaotic situation but soon the situation was diluted when a major number of vehicles were able to reach outside the Parliament House. The two routes from the President House led the members of the parliament and others to go out – first by coming to the Pak Secretariat and then to their destination and the other culminating near Imam Barri shrine.
