MQM protests against extra-judicial killings

ISLAMABAD: The activists and supporters of Muttahida Quami Movement’s (MQM) Islamabad and Rawalpindi chapter held a demonstration in front of the National Press Club against “enforced disappearances” and “extra-judicial killings” of party workers, as part of the party’s nationwide protests.Holding placards and banners inscribed with slogans for the recovery of these missing persons, MQM workers vociferously demanded that the judiciary and the government act against the injustices against the party. The party members in the Senate showed up at the demonstration to speak out against the ill-treatment to party workers and came hard on the federal and provincial governments for their inability to trace these workers.Addressing the demonstrators, Senator Nasreen Jalil regretted that a positive proposal of the party to purge Karachi of criminals through the ‘Karachi operation’ had been turned against the MQM rather than nabbing criminals.“We demanded the operation for eliminating criminals, but MQM workers are being targeted,” she stated. She alleged that party workers were being killed extra-judicially, which she said was a blatant violation of human rights.Nasreen disclosed that 45 workers of the MQM were still missing and feared that they might be killed.Senator Col (r) Tahir Hussain Mashahdi severely criticised the way party workers were being disappeared, and termed it a “grave injustice” with a party who had stood against the forces of extremism.Senator Mashahdi also spoke about the Protection of Pakistan Ordinance (PPO), which is now with the Senate in the form of a bill, and criticised the draft law as “being draconian that would be used against political workers”.“We have opposed this bill in the National Assembly and would not let it to sail through the Senate,” he vowed.
