Kh Asif regrets misunderstanding over army remarks

ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Friday called his past statements on the Pakistan Army a mistake, and said that a strong and respected army is a national asset. In a press statement, he said that being a Pakistani, he was proud of the velour and sacrifices of the men in uniform for the defence of the motherland. He said that in the last couple of weeks, some misunderstanding cropped up based on his speeches delivered many years back. He said that the statements were made in a different context and in a different environment. “This created a misplaced perception about me which is far from reality. It was neither my intention, nor my objective to undermine an institution, which I hold in high esteem.” The minister also said that a time when armed forces were fighting on many fronts for the last many years and rendering sacrifices unparalleled in history of Pakistan, it was a matter of great regret that an impression was being created by a section of the media about his views and feelings about rank and files of the armed forces and the institution, “which was completely false and misleading”.
