Imran calls for commission to investigate Geo affairs

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Saturday demanded the government set up an independent commission to investigate the alleged financial irregularities of Mir Khalil ur Rehman Foundation (MKRF), Geo Television and its owner Mir Shakil ur Rehman in a transparent manner. The PTI chief appealed to the nation at a press conference to boycott this media group as ‘its agenda is set by foreign funding from US and UK’. He demanded that the media group apologise to the nation for breaching the trust of the people for ‘following the foreign agenda’, besides apologising to him (Imran Khan) for his ‘character assassination, launching vilification campaign against him and disturbing his family and personal life’. Khan alleged that Geo was playing like media cell of the PML-N government. The incumbent government is also favouring the media group because both have common interests, he said. He said according to their information order for eight-hour transmission with picture of DG ISI in the background was issued by Mir Shakil ur Rehman himself. He said owner of the media group has turned into ‘Pharaoh’ and a ‘kingmaker’, who never cares to abide by any rules or regulations. He said PEMRA and other regulatory bodies were working like puppets in his hands. “It is so unfortunate that Defence Ministry moved a reference but information minister bailed out Geo by influencing the PEMRA,” he said. Responding to a question, Imran said he is ready for an open debate with Mir Shakil but “I know he will never turn up”.
