Italy awards two for archaeology work in Swat


ISLAMABAD: The Italian ambassador in Islamabad on Monday awarded Dr Luca Maria Olivieri, head of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Swat and Dr Faizaldad Kakar, former DG archaeology, the Order of the Star of Italy, conferred by the Italian president for the outstanding results of their joint work in promoting bilateral cultural relations.On the occasion, Ambassador Chiodi Cianfarani recalled that the Italian support to cultural activities in Pakistan comes in the framework of a historical presence in the country of Italian archaeologists and a strong tradition of bilateral cooperation in the fields of monument conservation, art, research, science and technology.In particular on archaeology, Ambassador Chiodi Cianfarani underscored that Italian archaeologists have been working in Pakistan since 1950s, with the Italian mission obtaining great results since the very beginning, with the successful discoveries of protohistoric graveyards, early and late-historic settlements, Gandhara and Islamic monuments, including in 1986 the uncovering in Udegram of the third oldest mosque in Pakistan founded by one of the generals of Mahmud of Ghazni in 1048. In 2013, a new archaeological museum in Saidu Sharif, funded by the Italian Development Cooperation, was completed and opened to the public.The Italian effort to discover, look after and pass on to future generations the historical legacy of Swat has also played an important role, the ambassador concluded, portraying a more comprehensive image of Pakistan showcasing the soft side of this beautiful country.
