ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani took notice on an application of Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed regarding environmental impact of proposed metro bus service in Rawalpindi-Islamabad.
The application was received through Human Rights Cell of Supreme Court of Pakistan containing the details of proposed Metro Bus Project Rawalpindi-Islamabad and media reports of different newspapers to the effect that he strongly supports the dire need of a mass transit system for Islamabad for its hundreds of thousand of commuters & this is indeed the need of hour, but he is worried about the impact of such project on the natural beauty and environment of most beautiful capital of any country in the world.
Taking the notice of potential environmental threat, the Chief Justice of Pakistan ordered detailed reports from Chairman CDA and Commissioner Rawalpindi/Director, Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus Service Project as to whether the project was not imposing a threat to the Islamabad Master Plan and its Green Belt.
Further if any Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) Study has been carried out with regard to the project.
The CJP has ordered that such reports together with technical reports, if any, by Pakistan Environment Protection Agency (EPA), Punjab Environment Protection Agency and Climate Change Division, be submitted by March 18.
