Azadi March disturbs life in twin cities

ISLAMABAD: The residents of the twin cities are facing difficulties ahead of Azadi March due to lack of public transport on roads.Although the police is taking strict measures for the security of the citizens but limited public transport on the roads is creating problems for the people to reach their destination. “There is a situation of uncertainty all around and no one is sure what is going to happen,” said Asad, a bank employee. “We celebrate Independence Day every year with zeal and fervour but this year everyone is worried about the circumstances which has affected the real spirit of our national day,” he added. The chaos created by some section of media regarding the sealing of the twin cities has confused the public for the last three days, said Zahid Ali, a doctor who runs a private clinic.Some shopkeepers of a shopping plaza on Muree Road said that there were no customers on the shops since morning and they are worried about out the business. “We would not open our shops on the 14th so that no one could damage our shops or break glasses because it is not easy to control a mob,” said a shopkeeper. Most of the private and public offices observed thin attendance and the staffers who have their own transport face no difficulty in reaching their workplaces but people who travel through public transport remained absent. Women also faced severe difficulty and had to wait for hours at the bus stands. Asia Zainab, an employee of the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) said, “I am waiting for more than one-and-a-half-hour but no transport is available.”The police personnel are deployed at all the entry and exit points of the capital and strict security checking of vehicles is underway but no resident is stopped to travel, said a police officer at Faizabad. He said, “It is our duty to ensure the safety of the citizens and for that the security has been beefed up but we do not want to stop the movement of the residents of the twin cities,” he added.
