ICT imposes Rs 1.3m fine on shopkeepers

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration has so far imposed heavy fines amounting to Rs1.3 million against 900 shopkeepers involved in overcharging and not displaying rate lists of the food items, besides sending 100 profiteers to judicial lockup during its ongoing crackdown in Ramazan.Twenty-two price control committees headed by the magistrates under the supervision Assistant Commissioner (Industrial Area) Nouman Yousaf checked 500 shops. The quality of the food items was being ensured in the markets. Samples of food items taken from the markets were sent to the laboratory for analysis and those selling sub-standard food items have been proceeded against under the Pure Food Ordinance. According to reports, the teams imposed fines amounting to Rs 75,000 on Thursday. The officials directed the shopkeepers to display the rate list of the food items at the shops, failing which stern action would be taken against the defaulters. Similarly price checking teams headed by different magistrates and assistant commissioners imposed heavy fines on the profiteers for over-charging during price checking in their jurisdictions.
