IHC suspends court order for case against Geo TV

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday dismissed an order of the Justice of Peace (JP) Islamabad regarding the registration of a case against Geo TV. A single-member bench of Justice Riaz Ahmed Khan heard the petition against the order of registration of a case, filed by the Jang Group. The counsel for the media group, Faisal Iqbal, pleaded that petitioner Arshad Butt was not an aggrieved party. He further contended that the petitioner even did not approach the police station concerned for getting the case registered, which was a pre-requisite before approaching the court. He further pleaded before the court that parallel petitions earlier filed against the same media group had been dismissed by the SHC, the IHC and the LHC. He said that the unanimous opinion of legal experts was that the additional district and sessions judge and the JP Islamabad, who passed an order under section 22-A to register an FIR against journalists under the treason and terrorism acts, was unlawful and the JP did not fulfil the requirements of the law. He said the JP had transgressed its authority by passing an order in the absence of any application moved to the police for lodging an FIR.
