Horsemen put up a thrilling show at annual tent pegging event

ISLAMABAD: Around 600 horsemen from 28 elite clubs of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir participated in the two-day tent pegging event, which concluded here on Saturday at the Fatima Jinnah (F9) Park.The event was organised by the Capital Development Authority’s (CDA) Directorate of Sports and Culture. This old sport, having military roots, gave mounted riders a chance to display their skills in the “competitions with weapons”. The event also proved to be a treat for the spectators who had gathered at the venue not only from the twin cities but also from across the country to witness horsemen showing off their skills in one of the most thrilling and adventurous games in the sporting world. Foreign dignities were also present during the event. Renowned teams and clubs from Afghanistan, Turkey, and China also participated in the competition for the first time. Speaking on the occasion, CDA Chairman Maroof Afzal said that the civic agency was committed to promoting cultural and traditional activities for the residents of the federal capital. “The provision of recreational and healthy activities to the citizens is our priority.”Maroof said that tent pegging was a traditional sport of Pakistan in which daring competitors challenge each other with an enthusiastic and emotional display of skills. “Sports like tent pegging put a positive impact on our society,” he said, and added that the CDA would continue to organise such healthy and traditional sports. He appreciated the department concerned for organising such a mega tent pegging competition and said that the CDA would continue to organise tent pegging competitions with further improvement.During the two days of the event, Malik Ramzan of Al-Khayam Mash-hadi Mehervi Ideal Club secured first position in single horsemen category. Mahar Nasir Ali Sipra of Loyalpur Club stood second, while Raja Mukhtar Hussain of Al-Haider Club secured third position, respectively. Maroof Afzal distributed prizes among the winners at the end of the competition.
