Police pickets at Chak Shehzad causing inconvenience

Islamabad: The newly established security pickets and barricades by the police at different routes in Chak Shehzad are creating inconvenience to the commuters.According to reports, the newly established pickets with the additional policemen deployed at different parts of the Chak Shehzad town are causing inconvenience to the people. A police spokesperson said that in the wake of threats to former president General Pervez Musharraf, beefing up the security was compulsory.Meanwhile, the residents of the locality have said that the extraordinary checking is creating problems for them as they are stopped after every few yards. The commuters believe that these procedures cannot stop terrorists.“Entering Chak Shehzad, we can see several policemen guarding the pickets. The way the police check people is not helpful in arresting terrorists and outlaws. Rather, it triggers public anger,” said Arif, a resident of Chak Shehzad, “It is a good step to ensure the security of the former president but they should not exceed the limit to check women,” he added. Ahmad, a motorcyclist, said that the irregular placement of the barriers on roads, danger of accidents at night due to non-reflective hurdles and impounding of motorcycles have become common at the police pickets.A practicing lawyer at the District and Session’s Court, Advocate Amanullah, when asked about the issue, said that the setting up of the pickets for security reasons was legally correct. But one has to take into account the inconvenience it is causing to the public. To ensure foolproof security of the former president, there are three layers of security in and around his farmhouse. Two of them are assigned to the police and one to the Rangers.Currently, there are 198 police personnel around Musharraf’s farmhouse under the supervision of SP Islamabad. Besides, a contingent of 100 personnel has been put on standby that is deployed around the farmhouse with the additional establishment of seven police checkpoints in the area.Police spokesperson Naeem said that the enhancement of the security and establishment of the pickets were need of the hour. He said that the police has enhanced the security of Musharraf and set up pickets after receiving information from the Interior Ministry about a possible attack.
