Forces out to undermine govt’s peace efforts: PM

ISLAMABAD: Responding to the audacious terrorist attack at an Islamabad court, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday claimed that efforts are being made to undermine the government’s efforts for peace. The prime minister’s comments came after he chaired a high level meeting which focused on matters of national security and the Taliban’s announcement of a month-long ceasefire as well as Monday’s attack in Islamabad. The meeting was attended by Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director General Lt Gen Zaheeurl Islam, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif. Earlier, the prime minister and COAS General Raheel Sharif held a one-on-one meeting. General Raheel Sharif called on Prime Minister Nawaz and discussed Taliban’s announcement of a ceasefire. They also exchanged views on matters related to national security and overall law and order situation in the country. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar, DG ISI and defence minister also attended the meeting Nawaz Sharif has called a meeting of the peace committee formed for talks with the Taliban today (Tuesday) in Islamabad. According to media reports the meeting will be held at the Prime Minister’s House. In the meeting officials will discuss the restoration of the peace process. Before the meeting with the prime minister, the committee will meet to consider the next step in the dialogue process with militants.
