Lack of road sense main reason behind accidents

ISLAMABAD: Lack of road sense and violation of traffic rules are the main causes of the rising number of traffic jams and accidents in the twin cities. The situation in the twin cities is somewhat worse, as people generally lack awareness about crossing roads and using underpasses and overhead bridges. Traffic violations like wrong parking, overtaking, riding a motorbike without helmet, speeding and change of lane are a common scene. Moreover, public transporters do not care about the traffic rules as they stop the vehicle in the middle of the road, which can cause a serious problem during peak hours. Asad Ali, a motorist, said that drivers of most of the public transport vans are ‘uneducated’ and have no sense of traffic rules. He said that due to speeding transport vehicles, pedestrian had to wait for long to cross the road, while sometimes they also created problems for themselves and for other motorists while doing so. “There is a dire need to raise awareness among the masses about observing traffic rules to ensure safe travelling on roads.” Suhail, a resident of Raja Bazaar, said that wrong parking, overtaking and encroachments had become a threat for the citizens. Another pedestrian said that walking on footpaths had become very difficult due to illegal parking and encroachments on the roads. A traffic warden said that the police had held certain programmes for creating awareness among the people, urging them to observe traffic rules. He said that department had also distributed traffic pamphlets among the motorists for ensuring smooth traffic flow.
