ABUJA: The police in northeastern Nigeria’s state of Bauchi on Sunday confirmed that at least 10 people were killed in an attack by gunmen who unleashed terror at a brothel.
At least 14 people were also injured in the attack at Bayan Gari district of the provincial capital, according to Haruna Mohammed, the spokesman of police in the northern state. His confirmation of the incident was the first by any security agency or government officials since the incident occurred early Saturday.
He said lifeless bodies of the victims were deposited at a government-run university teaching hospital in the state, adding the injured were also taken to the same hospital for treatment. Security agents, comprising of the military, police, paramilitary officers, as well as the Nigeria Red Cross personnel, were quickly deployed to the scene to cordon off the area, evacuate dead bodies and assist injured victims, he added.
Witnesses said the gunmen, numbering five, stormed the area in military uniform and wreaked havoc on the patrons of the brothel by detonating explosives and shooting indiscriminately at the people around.
