ISLAMABAD – Turkish President-elect Recep Tayyip Erdogan has phoned newly-elected Libyan parliament speaker Aguila Salah Issa to congratulate him and to reaffirm Turkey's support to the parliament as a legitimate representative of the Libyan people.
"Erdogan told Issa that he would send a parliamentary delegation to the headquarters of the Libyan parliament in Tobruk to extend Turkey's official congratulations," MP Galal al-Shouhaidi told Anadolu Agency. The two leaders discussed the latest developments in Libya and Erdogan pledged Turkish support for Libya in all fields, he said.
Issa, for his part, congratulated Erdogan on his victory in last week's presidential election. According to official results, Erdogan won the race in the first round with nearly 52 percent of the votes. Libya's new parliament assumed legislative authority from the General National Congress, the mandate of which expired earlier this year.
