Kurt Cobain will be celebrated every year on his birthday by his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington. On Wednesday, Mayor Bill Simpson and the city council decided that February 20 will become “Kurt Cobain Day” annually.
“Aberdeen residents may justifiably take pride in the role our community played in the life of Kurt Cobain and the international recognition our community has gained from its connections with Kurt Cobain and his artistic achievements,” reads the city’s proclamation, as reported by the local radio station KXRO Newsradio. The full document will be read aloud on February 12th, and Simpson has said it is possible that the event could turn into “Kurt Cobain Week” as plans develop.
The proclamation also singles out the efforts of the Aberdeen Museum and many volunteers. Cobain has already been honoured on the city’s “Welcome To…” sign, which also bears the title of one of Nirvana’s most famous songs, “Come As You Are”.
Aberdeen’s neighbour, Hoquiam, recently announced that they would celebrate Nirvana Day this year, with events planned for April 10. While Cobain was born and raised in Aberdeen, he did briefly live in Hoquiam, which is located four miles away. “They bring great honour to our entire community,” Hoquiam mayor Jack Durney said. “And I think that it’s good Kurt Cobain lived in Hoquiam for a little while, but he and Krist Novoselic are part of our community and I think it’s good to honour our sons and their great accomplishments.”
Also on April 10, Nirvana will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside Kiss, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, Cat Stevens and Linda Rondstadt. “I’d like to thank the committee not only for this induction, but also for recognizing Nirvana for what we were: pure rock & roll,” said drummer Dave Grohl after the announcement. “Most of all, thank you to all of the fans that have supported rock & roll throughout the years and to Kurt and Krist (Noveselic), without whom I would not be here today.”
