Happy summer spritzing: How to prevent perfumes from going bad

Published on: March 8, 2016 8:26 AM

Everyone loves a creative hack. In the beauty world, there are tons of time-saving, money-saving ways to re-purpose products, plus techniques you can try that don’t require you to have the makeup brush prowess of Pat McGrath.

It’s not necessary that everybody has a signature perfume. Many of us have a lot of fragrance choices. As a matter of fact, most of us will agree that either our bathroom or dresser table can be found cluttered with perfume bottles.

Probably one of the biggest culprits that cause perfumes to go bad is light, particularly sunlight. Most people with a bottle of perfume make the ultimate, but very common, mistake. They display the bottle on their vanity, or tabletop, and allow them to be exposed to the sun. This causes some of the more volatile components in perfumes to break down, or alter. Eventually, the fragrance will change on you and oftentimes, this is not for the better.

Now, can you really blame anybody for doing this? Some perfume bottles are downright beautiful and to not display them seems like a shame. But did you know that direct contact to sunlight can start deteriorating a perfume within a manner of hours? So while you’ve got a beautiful bottle on your vanity, that stuff inside of it isn’t doing so well.

This tip is an oldie but a goodie, but now that it’s hot as blazes outside, you should think about protecting your fragrances, because extreme heat can make them go bad. Fabrice Penot says, “all perfumes need to be stored in the refrigerator”. The added bonus to this tip would be that it also feels cool and refreshing when you spritz it on your neck and pulse points.

Just a word of warning, we need to keep in mind that extreme cold can be just as bad as extreme heat, so if you have one of those refrigerators that freezes the veggies in the crisper, skip it. This is one of the reasons to keep them on the door, because the temperature isn’t as low there. Don’t underestimate perfume’s ability to stick around, but don’t overestimate it either. Take the necessary precautions to ensure your fragrances last and you can enjoy them for many years.
