The US has acknowledged Pakistan’s recent success in fighting terrorism in its Congressionally Mandated Country Report on Terrorism 2014. The report outlined the conduct of Operation Zarb-e-Azb. It stated, “South Asia remained a front line in the battle of terrorism,” and emphasised the importance of Pakistan’s role in this uphill struggle. It applauded the degradation of al Qaeda’s core in Pakistan and Afghanistan: “Al Qaeda’s presence in the region continued to face pressure from International, Afghan, and Pakistani forces, and Pakistan’s ongoing offensive in North Waziristan Agency, launched in June 2014, further degraded the group’s freedom to operate.” These operations have forced the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to move into Afghanistan, vacating their bases in Pakistan. The report also credited the Pakistani security forces with intercepting a large amount of weapons, bombs and explosives along with modern telecommunications equipment. The US praising Pakistan is a new positive phenomenon and hopefully it will remain a consistent partner in eradicating the terrorist threast. The report laid emphasis on al Qaeda whereas observers are of the opinion that after the death of Osama bin Laden, the terrorist organisation has weakened. Pakistan’s focus in Operation Zarb-e-Azab is to target our homegrown terrorists. The eradication of al Qaeda is the added benefit of this campaign. The noteworthy fact of the report is the acknowledgement of the achievement of Pakistan against the destructive terrorists holding the country back and rescuing it from the suffocating Taliban culture. The country has long suffered from the negative image pertaining to the hateful picture conjured up at the mere mention of that name. The country and its people need room to breathe, a violence-free space they can finally refer to as home. A liberal, modern Pakistan needs to emerge and become a living reality, not merely a vision or a dream. This commendable acknowledgement in the US report marks welcome remarkable progress for Pakistan. The words of encouragement are a sign of a brighter tomorrow, the ountry hopefully finally emerging from the dark shadows of the past, whereby self-destructiveness is finally being cast away. The report in passing also remarked on the Indian authorities groundlessly blaming Pakistan for sustaining terrorism.. *
