Sir: General Qamar Javed Bajwa visited Karachi for the first time after taking charge of the army and was given a detailed briefing about the ongoing operation in Karachi, a city which contributes about 70 percent to the national economy. It includes the country’s significant industrial areas such as Korangi, Landhi and Port Qasim. It is the 20th largest city in the world. However, the presence of criminal elements in such an important city is a major question mark on the performance of the government and law-enforcement agencies. It is the need of the hour that the crackdown should be expanded to rope in all criminals. Furthermore, without revamping the police department, long-term tranquility cannot be achieved. Corruption is the mother of all evils. Institutions such as the National Accountability Bureau and the Federal Board of Revenue should start functioning in full spirit. Combined efforts from all law enforcement institutions alone guarantee long-term peace in Karachi. KIRAN SHAKEEL Islamabad
