Sir: The latest report by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) is alarming indeed. According to the HRCP, sectarian attacks increased by as much as one-fifth in 2013, resulting in the deaths of more than 680 people. All minorities from Shias to Christians and Hindus to Ahmedis are under threat and are feeling insecure in this climate of violence and hate. The present government is doing nothing to make them feel safer. Rather, it is holding talks with the perpetrators of this violence. How can we explain ourselves to our minorities, people who call themselves ‘Pakistanis’ as much as the majority Sunnis do?The HRCP report should come as an eye-opener for the authorities, nudging them on to do something about the situation before it spirals out of control.
