A decision by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan to rejoin Parliament can be termed a positive development. The PTI chief has announced that his party would file a couple of motions against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for his alleged false statements. Though the joining of Parliament is a good decision, yet its boycott by the PTI seemed equally absurd. The PTI is trying hard to prove alleged corruption by the premier and his family members after their names appeared in the Panama Leaks. Mr Khan says that he wants to move the National Assembly to gather support from other opposition parties for taking the prime minister to task for “blatantly lying to the nation”. On October 4, the PTI chief had announced a boycott of Parliament’s joint session, saying that attending the session would be like endorsing Premier Sharif who, he claimed, had lost legitimacy in the wake of the Panama Papers controversy. Though the accountability of the head of the state is necessary, yet what about the outspoken nature of Imran Khan, who had backtracked on his statement last year. In July 2015, Imran Khan had termed his allegations of 35 punctures against then caretaker chief minister Najam Sethi as merely political talk. If the allegation of 35 punctures was merely political talk, then what is the credibility of Imran Khan himself? Since the 2013 elections, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has been following the politics of complaints and protests against the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government. Soon after the elections in 2013, Khan started an agitation against the government on the basis of unsubstantiated accusations that the elections were massively rigged. However, he miserably failed to topple the government of Nawaz Sharif. This year too, the PTI chief tried to create the same situation by making a call for locking down the Federal Capital on the grounds that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family members have failed to clear their names in the Panama scandal. His diehard workers from across the country sprung up to his call. However, the PTI Chairman created an embarrassing situation for his supporters when he withdrew his call. The sudden u-turns of Imran Khan often stun his supporters, who become uncertain what to do next. Who will trust the PTI after this inconsistency in making decisions? The PTI in its initial years had posed itself as the saviour of the nation but due to consistently changing stances over different issues, including the current one by its founder, has evoked for Imran the label ‘U-turn Khan’. The masses are really getting disappointed with the politics of the PTI. It would be better for the PTI that it should work for the stability of democracy along with other political parties. It should become a part of the democratic system and work for the betterment of the country. It is also the responsibility of the premier to come clean before the nation and produce credible evidence about his family’s assets in Parliament to end all controversies once and for all. *
