The worst tragedy that struck Nepal in the form of a massive earthquake has shaken the whole social fabric of the poor country. The government of Nepal is overwhelmed by the devastation caused by the deadliest quake in the last 80 years. Given its rugged topography, complex geology, climatic conditions, active tectonic processes, and most importantly poor disaster preparedness, Nepal is highly vulnerable to various kinds of natural disasters. The latest calamity was the biggest one in its magnitude and flattened most of Nepalese cities. Nepal’s Emergency Operation Centre has revealed that so far 5,057 people have been killed and almost 10,000 injured in the massive earthquake. Eight million people in 39 of Nepal’s 75 districts have been directly affected by the quake, and desperate survivors are becoming increasingly angry over the government’s slow rescue operations and lack of relief. Casualties are still occurring. The 7.8 Richter scale quake struck western Nepal and Kathmandu on April 25. The massive tremor extended into India, Tibet and Bangladesh, killing 72, 25 and two persons respectively in those countries. At least 18 climbers were killed on Mount Everest by avalanches triggered by the quake. According to initial estimates, the cost of the disaster could be as much as $ 10 billion. Initial estimates predict that the death toll could reach 10,000 in Nepal. Millions of survivors, however, still lack the most basic necessary facilities such as food, drinking water and shelter and are cramped into makeshift camps or sleeping in open spaces, fearing more tremors. People living in rural districts have been confronting the worst situation. Scores of villages are difficult to reach because of ongoing landslides and bad weather, leaving homeless survivors to attempt to rescue those trapped inside collapsed buildings with picks and shovels and bare hands. The situation is very troubling and needs the immediate attention of the world. The citizens are desperately waiting for food, water and shelter and incidents of clashes over supplies are rising. Anger is boiling and could lead to catastrophic events. Although there were predictions that a massive earthquake might hit the Kathmandu area, the government did not take any disaster management steps. In fact, no precautionary steps were taken to protect millions of Nepalese people. On the other hand, the international community showed a disappointingly lacklustre response to the tragedy. Except a few countries, including China, India, the US, Pakistan, Japan and a few others, the rest of the nations showed apathy to this disaster. There is a great need to accelerate the rescue and succour operations in Nepal. The neighbouring states should boost the sending of relief items and medical aid to disaster-hit areas more actively. They should extend all out help to Nepal to cope with the aftermath of the devastating earthquake. *
