Lawyers to observe ‘black day’ tomorrow
LAHORE: On the call of the Punjab Bar Council, the bar associations in Punjab will observe a ‘black day’ on August 10 (tomorrow) to protest the government move authorising superior court judges to take disciplinary action against lawyers.
All bar councils and associations are opposed to the proposed amendment to Section 54 of the Legal Practitioners and Bar Councils Act 1973, which, if it is approved by parliament, will empower superior court judges to proceed against the lawyers on charges of misconduct.
The lawyers will hoist black flags on the bar buildings and wear black armbands on August 10. The bar associations will also hold meetings to adopt resolutions against the government move.
The lawyers have urged the judiciary to distance itself from the government move as it would not serve no purpose but to malign the superior courts. The Pakistan Bar Council has also called a meeting on August 10 to decide a further line of action. staff report
