MMA observes protest day against inflation
Staff Report
LAHORE: Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), on appeal of party leader Qazi Hussain Ahmed, observed a countrywide protest day on Friday against inflation and recent increase in petrol prices.
In Lahore, delivering the Friday Sermon at Jamia Mansoorah Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Secretary General Syed Munawwar Hassan said inflation and new taxes announced in the annual budget were uncalled for. He said that the government should not borrow from the US and instead should strengthen ties with China. He said the inflation would continue unless the masses started a movement against the military regime.
According to the JI headquarters, almost two-dozen protest demonstrations were held in Karachi against increase in petrol prices and lawlessness in the city.
Dr Merajul Huda, MMA and Karachi JI leader, condemned the raise in salaries of the MPs and said that the NWFP government had set an example worth following by decreasing MPs salaries and allowances. MNA Mian Mohammad Aslam, MMA leader, led a large protest demonstration in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Protestors were carrying banners and placards inscribed with anti-government slogans.
