India, Nepal agree to exchange intelligence

NEW DELHI: In order to check inter-border drug trafficking, India and Nepal have agreed to exchange intelligence through diplomatic and Interpol channels.

The two sides have also agreed to share information on human trafficking, particularly on organised criminal gangs involved in the trade, a CBI spokesman said here today.

He said besides these, a number of other agreements were arrived at between the two neighbours during third interpol officers meeting held at Kathmandu earlier this month.

In a joint statement issued at the end of the meeting, both sides expressed the need for a system of verification of antecedents of persons seeking jobs. The two countries suggested that a mechanism needed to be devised as a preventive measure for combating movement of criminals and anti-social elements. Both the countries agreed to look at alternate ways and means for facilitating investigations in which the witness was residing in either country, the spokesman said.

Realising the threat posed by terrorism and organised crime, a need was felt for devising an effective mechanism to strengthen existing mutual co-operation by sharing intelligence and rendering pro-active assistance. —PTI
