JWP lists 61 casualties in Dera Bugti clash

Staff Report

Quetta: The Jamhoori Watan Party on Thursday released a list of 61 people killed in a clash between Frontier Corps personnel and the Bugti tribesmen in Dera Bugti on March 17.

Senator Amanullah Kinrani, party spokesman and president of the Balochistan High Court Bar Association, gave the list to reporters at a news conference.

According to the list, 19 Hindu children between ages 1 and 16, three women, and 11 men were killed in the clash. Nineteen other Hindu men and five women were injured. The list included 28 Bugti tribesmen killed in the clash but gave no names of the 33 injured tribesmen. Senator Kinrani said that according to his information 35 Frontier Corp personnel were killed and 19 were injured. He claimed that seven vehicles were damaged in the clash.

FC spokesman had stated that 8 personnel were killed and 24 were injured in the clash on March 17. Abdul Samad Lasi, district coordination officer of Dera Bugti, had said that about 20 to 25 Bugti tribesmen were killed in the clash. The government has not clarified the casualty figures. Senator Kinrani said the party had submitted an application to the Balochistan High Court for action against those responsible for killing innocent people, adding that the BHCBA had already submitted a similar application to the high court.

The senator said the BHC had served notice on the officials including the provincial home secretary and police officials. He said the situation in Dera Bugti had not improved and Bugti tribesman and FC personnel were still holding their positions. Markets and bazaars remained closed, he said. In a press statement, Senator Kinrani denied press reports that the government and tribesmen had started implementing the accord reached between Nawab Akbar Bugti and Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain.
