Barghouthi to quit election race if demands met
JERUSALEM: Jailed leader Marwan Barghouthi will quit the Palestinian presidential race if his political demands are met by his main election rival, former prime minister Mahmoud Abbas, a Fatah official said on Wednesday. Barghouthi, a popular grass-roots figure in a Palestinian uprising, is running neck-and-neck with Abbas — Israel and Washington’s favourite as a potential peacemaker — in opinion polls for the Jan. 9 ballot for Yasser Arafat’s successor. reuters
