Link newspaper ads to journalists salary: NALC
Staff Report
GILGIT: The Northern Areas Legislative Council (NALC) asked the Northern Areas administration to help impoverished journalists by giving official advertisements and supplements to those newspapers that pay wages to their employees, sources told Daily Times on Saturday.
In a resolution authored by NALC Member Syed Jafar Shah, the council observed that working journalists in the region are not being paid despite the fact that news agencies receive large amounts from the government for advertisements and special supplements.
Journalists’ Union President Imtiaz Ali Taj said, “The journalists in this region have been deprived of their wages. This is a gross violation of human rights”. He said they would quit if the newspaper owners did not pay wages. Mr Taj said, “The only asset given is a press card which does not fill our stomachs and sometimes journalists are vulnerable to monetary temptations”. He said financial constraints and a poor communication infrastructure leave journalists unable to cover important stories. He appealed to human rights and international media organisations to note their problems.
ISO demands removal of KIU officials: The Imamia Students Organisation (ISO) demanded President General Pervez Musharraf, who is also the chancellor of Karakuram International University (KIU), to remove KIU Vice Chancellor Dr Azam Khan and Registrar Col (r) Arshad Mehmood Chaudhry for misguiding police who baton-charged and used tear gas on protesting students recently.
