MMA readying students for anti-Musharraf protests
LAHORE: The Muttahida Majilis-e-Amal (MMA) is preparing student organisations for its movement against General Pervez Musharraf. Sources told Daily Times that the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT), the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami, and Jamiat Talaba Islam (JTI), the student wing of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, have been directed to prepare their members for large-scale protests. The IJT is more active in universities and colleges while the JTI is most influential in madrassas. There are around one million madrassa students throughout the country and most of these seminaries are affiliated with religious parties. According to the sources, the JI and JUI are trying to convince the other four parties in the MMA to also prepare students in their madrassas for the anti-Musharraf campaign, but had not yet received a positive response. staff report
