PbBC to protest amendment to Defamation Law
* To observe ‘black day’ on August 10
Staff Report
LAHORE: The Punjab Bar Council (PbBC) will raise the issue of a proposed bill to amend the Defamation Law during its protest campaign on August 10, a PbBC executive committee meeting decided on Saturday.
PbBC officials condemned the bill calling it an attempt to chain the press and silence the voice of dissent. They said the amendment would be a “draconian step” to strangle press freedom in Pakistan.
The PbBC will observe “black day” on August 10 as part of its campaign against the proposed amendment to the Bar Councils Act.
The bar offered fateha for the late Narowal DPO Tayyab Saeed, who was killed in an encounter on Friday. He was the son of former PbBC member Rao Kunwar Saeed.
PBC Vice Chairman Tanvirur Rehman Randhawa, Executive Committee Chairman Pir Masood Chishti, PBC members Rao Muhammad Jamil, Tahir Mehmood Mufti, Anwarul Haq Punnu, Talib Hussain Chattha and Arif Chaudhry attended the meeting.
