Collapse of cellular company’s tower destroys houses and shops

GUJRAT: The communication tower of a private mobile phone company collapsed in Marghzar Colony during a heavy windstorm on Tuesday night. The mobile company had installed the tower atop a multi-storey building a few weeks ago. The tower was uprooted by the windstorm and crashed on top of electricity wires on the adjacent road. The tower’s fall disrupted the supply of electricity to the area for several hours and damaged dozens of shops and houses, sources said. The electricity supply remained suspended till 12:00pm on Wednesday night. The accident also hindered the flow of traffic. The windstorm also uprooted dozens of trees in different parts of the city, one of which also damaged the gate of the Gujrat District Bar’s office. Many signboards also collapsed in the storm. The walls of the official residencies of Gujrat District Police Officer Raja Munawar Hussain and SP Headquarters Javed Iqbal Shami also collapsed. staff report
