Poverty causing crime: SC judge
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court senior most judge, Justice Munir A Sheikh, observed on Friday that poverty was the central cause of increasing the crime rate in the country and no institution provided relief to the poor except for the Supreme Court.
He was hearing an appeal of a low-grade MCB employee – sacked by the bank for a misappropriation of Rs 9,000 – who has been pleading innocence for the last seven years in different courts. “The poor are helpless and forlorn as no one is prepared to hear their voice. This negligence has directly resulted in the increase of crimes rate. People have taken up arms and have resorted to terrorism,” Justice Sheikh said. He also recited a Hadith of the Holy Prophet (PBUH): “Poverty brings a man to the verge of apostasy.” The appellant, who appeared in person before the court, submitted that he was a regular employee of the MCB but was removed from service on charges of embezzlement. He said he had gone to every court – “starting from the Labour Court to the High Court” – but was not given the opportunity to defend himself properly. For the last seven years, he added, his family was in a financial crunch. —Staff Report
