SC to hear Rehmat Afridi’s appeal on Nov 3
LAHORE: The Supreme Court (SC) will take up an appeal by Rehmat Shah Afridi, chief editor of The Frontier Post and the Urdu daily Maidan, on November 3.
A division bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) had reduced Afridi’s death sentence to life imprisonment in June 2003. Senior advocate Abid Hassan Minto will represent Afridi while the prosecution lawyer is Khawaja Sultan Ahmad.
The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) had impounded Afridi’s car outside a five-star hotel on The Mall in Lahore on April 12, 1999 and reportedly found 20 kilogrammes of hashish in it. The ANF arrested Afridi and on his information, the anti-drugs agency seized a truckload of 651 kilogrammes of hashish from Shahkot, Sheikhupura district. The truck’s driver and cleaner were also arrested in the raid.
Two cases of narcotics possession and trafficking were registered against Afridi on the same day while one case was registered against truck driver Missal Khan and cleaner Abdul Maalik. Two separate challans were later submitted in the court. staff report
