Months ahead are critical: Musharraf
ISLAMABAD: The next few months are extremely important for a possible breakthrough between Pakistan and India on major issues, said President Gen Pervez Musharraf on Thursday.
Speaking to businessmen, the president stressed on the importance of the coming months to normalise relations with India while referring to a recent meeting with Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in New York.
However, President Musharraf did not clearly state what kind of breakthrough could be expected but said he hoped disputes such as the Kashmir issue would be resolved amicably. The two leaders had agreed to explore “all options” necessary to bring a conclusive end to the Kashmir standoff.
The composite dialogue process is currently underway between the two countries and Pakistan has asked India to schedule seven meetings during November and December.
Singh raised hopes for peace by saying that the composite dialogue was a new beginning and he would work with President Musharraf despite any difficulties that lay ahead.
President Musharraf seemed optimistic and said the on-going peace process would result in increased trade and economic cooperation between India and Pakistan. He reaffirmed the government’s pledge to continue the economic reformation of the country and urged the private sector to contribute in the process. staff report
