PML-N back for Data Ganj Baksh Town fight

Staff Report

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz candidates filed nomination papers for the offices of Data Ganj Baksh Town nazim and naib nazim on Monday.

Rana Ijaz Hafeez is the candidate for town nazim and Syed Waris Ali Shah for naib town nazim. Their competitors in the by-poll are Tariq Sana Bajwa, the nazim of Union Council 68, and Shahid Munir Malik, the naib nazim of Union Council 86. The slots fell vacant after town nazim Khawaja Hassaan and naib nazim Mian Usman resigned in August.

Mr Hassaan was present when the nomination papers were filed. PML-N supporters claimed that MMA and PPP councilors would vote for them.

Mr Bajwa, the ruling PML’s candidate, said that his panel was confident of victory as they had got the a no-confidence motion passed against Mr Usman. He denied using government resources but admitted that he was being politically supported. He said that his panel would bring about remarkable changes in the town. Mr Bajwa said that they would follow the Local Government Ordinance. He accused the former officials of nepotism and ignoring the development of the town.

Mr Hafeez accused the government of making the town a ‘political playground’ and sidelining the interests of the town. He said that they were ready to tackle the government’s pressure with the help of public support. He said that their panel was determined to solve the public’s problems.

There are 693 seats in the Data Ganj Baksh Town council, but five seats are vacant. The nomination papers will be scrutinised on September 8 and finalised on September 13.
