MMA committee meets today
By Mohammad Imran
ISLAMABAD: The first meeting of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) coordination committee would be held today (Thursday) to work out a strategy for upcoming local government elections and finalise the schedule for a protest against the recent increase in petroleum prices.
“The committee, formed by MMA’s central leadership, will meet under the chairmanship of Liaqat Baloch, deputy secretary general of the six-party religious alliance,” sources told Daily Times.
They said the most important agenda item of the meeting was to finalise the strategy for the upcoming local government elections. “The committee will prepare a report and will present it to the MMA supreme council. The report will cover seat adjustments to be made with opposition parties,” the sources added. “The report will be on a district-to-district basis and will clearly indicate which party was strong in which district so that the MMA could form an alliance with that party,” sources said.
They said the committee will also propose a schedule for a protest campaign against the recent increase in petroleum prices and general price-hike in the country, which would be approved by the supreme council. The committee will also propose a date for an all parties’ conference to discuss the situation in Karachi and the forthcoming local government elections, the sources added. The committee consists of Liaqat Baloch, Maulana Abdul Gahfoor Haideri, Dr Sahibzada Abu Al Kahir Muhmmad Zubair and Allama Jalil Naqvi.
