Water body seeks extension till December for KBD report
ISLAMABAD: The technical committee on water resources has sought time from the government till December for presenting its report on Kalabagh dam (KBD).
This development has diluted the chances of initiating construction work on Kalabagh dam this year.
Committee sources told Online on Wednesday that President General Pervez Musharraf had given June 30 as the deadline to the technical committee for submitting its report. However committee chairman ANG Abbasi requested the president and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz for an extension till December 31, 2005 to prepare a comprehensive report and brief relevant authorities.
The request has been approved and a budget has been released to the committee till December.
The committee will complete its report by August 30 and later consult different circles. The entire task will be finalised by December 31.
However, Senator Nisar Ahmad Memon, chairman parliamentary committee on water resources, has voiced concern over the technical committee’s move. His stance is that allowing more time to the committee will worsen the situation. “The committee should furnish its report soon to facilitate the government in taking a decision on constructing either the Kalabagh or Bhasha dam,” he said. online
