Australians visit World War One battlefields

LONDON: Ricky Ponting and his Australia cricket squad travelled to France on Monday to pay their respects to their nation’s soldiers who died in World War One.

The players were due to lay a wreath at the Australian National War Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux near the Somme and also visit the battleground of Pozieres. Australia are due to take part in a one-day triangular series starting next week before the five-match Ashes series. Prior to the 2001 Ashes series, Steve Waugh and his squad visited the World War One battlefield of Gallipoli. reuters
