Agriculture Ministry directed to adopt bio-safety measures
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has directed the Food and Agriculture Ministry to adopt bio-safety measures in the agriculture sector to grow disease-free crops and boost the agricultural production. According to an official statement, Mr Aziz said this while chairing a meeting on the Bio-Safety Guideline for Agriculture and Pharmaceutical sector on Thursday. The participants were informed about bio-safety measures and agricultural production. Countries like China, Egypt, Argentina, India and Malaysia have already adopted these measures to boost their agricultural production. The prime minister directed the Environment Ministry to hold a seminar in the second quarter of the current year to discuss the issue in detail and create public awareness on the subject. The Environment Ministry was directed to prepare bio-safety rules. Major (r) Tahir Iqbal, environment minister; Muhammad Nasir Khan, health minister; agriculture secretary and other senior officials were present in the meeting. Talking to parliamentarians who called him on Thursday, Mr Aziz said the country was on the path to prosperity because of the government’s successful economic policies and people would see the results soon. The prime minister said one of government’s top priorities was to provide basic facilities to the people; provision of clean drinking water, healthcare facilities and jobs.
