Gamblers lose millions on fake cricket tips

LAHORE: Hundreds of gamblers were cheated out of millions of rupees in the second One-Day cricket match between Pakistan and India on Tuesday after being tipped by bookies about Pakistan sure win. The total bets for the match exceeded Rs 9 billion.
Nearly 35,000 gambling dens of the city had hinted frequent bet placers that the Indians would lose the toss and the match. However, Pakistan not only lost the toss, but also the match.
Sources in gambling houses said that when Sachin Tendulkar got run-out, a record bet was placed on the Pakistani cricket team. The tip floated by the gambling dens claimed that bookies in Bombay were predicting a Pakistani win. “The betters were shocked by Pakistan’s defeat. Some were even seen crying their heart out,” said a bookmaker, who asked not to be named. Salman and Noman, two tenderfoots who lost Rs 230,000 told Daily Times that they were almost sure that Pakistan would win. “We don’t normally bet on Pakistan, but due to the tip we were sure that we would have a windfall. Gambling isn’t a fair business, so we can’t complain against bookies.”
