Man condemned for spending error money

A Swiss court Wednesday handed down a suspended prison term to a man who went on a spending spree after his bank deposited 244,000 Swiss francs into his account by mistake.

“I thought it was Christmas,” said the 42-year-old man, who had admitted spending around 190,000 Swiss francs of the amount. His lawyer had urged the case be thrown out as the man had no intention of committing fraud and the bank was partly to blame. The court found the man guilty of fraudulently using money that did not belong to him, and gave him an eight-month suspended jail term. —AFP
