No lawyers strike in Gujrat, says Pervaiz

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi said on Sunday that most lawyers in Gujrat had been attending court and it was wrong to say they were on strike. Mr Elahi, talking to a delegation of the Gujrat Bar Association, said some people were trying to distract lawyers from their responsibilities for personal and political interest. He said lawyers played a pivotal role in a democracy. Mr Elahi said that on the directions of President General Pervez Musharraf, funds were being provided to all district and tehsil bar associations for the construction of bar buildings and libraries. He said lawyers’ housing colonies would be set up in all districts and tehsils. The delegation presented a list of lawyers in the meeting who were regularly attending courts. Earlier, a section of the press reported that the Gujrat lawyers had been on strike for the last 50 days to protest against the behaviour of the district police chief. CM congratulates by-poll winners: Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has congratulated the Pakistan Muslim League candidates who swept the by-elections in Bahawalpur and Lahore. In a statement issued on Sunday, Mr Elahi said that the success of the PML candidates was a victory of the politics of tolerance and service. He congratulated the MPAs and MNAs of Bahawalpur and Lahore, Muslim League officials and representatives of the district government for the success. Mr Elahi asked the winning candidates to consult all the people in their constituencies irrespective of their political affiliation. He said by voting in large numbers for the PML candidates, the public had supported the government’s development policies. staff report
